Peresopnytsia Gospels Presented at St. Alexander’s Metochion of Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society in Jerusalem
0 Comments Published by georgy on Sunday, October 5 at 10:43 PM.On Sunday, September 28, His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine presided at the presentation of the Peresopnytsia Gospels at St. Alexander Metochion of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society as part of his Holy Land pilgrimage program.
At the ceremony there were also chairman of the Society count M.O.Vorontsov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Israel I.V.Timofeev with wife and the representatives of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission, hierarchs and numerous pilgrims from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Greeting His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr, chairman of the Society count M.O.Vorontsov told of the long-time friendly relations with the Primate of the UOC, of the Society's participation in the festivities dedicated to the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus. He concluded his speech making a gift to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of a piece of cloth which covered the body of the founder of St. Alexander Metochion Venerable Martyr Princess Elisaveta Feodorovna.
Having thanked for the relic, His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr told of the story of creation of the Peresopnytsia Gospels and of the process of its facsimile reprinting. His Beatitude emphasized the supertemporal significance of the Gospels and noted: "We would like that the Gospels, made in Ukraine remained in this holy place." Then His Beatitude gave as a gift to St. Alexander Metochion one copy of the Gospel. Having received the shrine, chairman of the Society said that "all of those who created this Gospel, all of them dreamed of visiting the Holy land; through this work they stay here, at the doorstep of the Judgment Gates, where our metochion is situated. Thus their dream has come true today."
On the part of the Ukrainian state Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in Israel I.V.Timofeev took the floor: "Today this holy book forwards true unification of the Orthodox people in Ukraine. In this respect it is difficult to overestimate its significance for Ukraine and the Ukrainian nation. The Ukrainian Embassy in Israel also received a copy of the Peresopnytsia Gospels as a present.
Mother Superior of the St. Michael Odesa Convent hegumeness Seraphima (Shevchyk), chairwoman of the Synodal Department "Church and Culture". She spoke of the traditions of the Ukrainian pilgrimage, starting from the first known pilgrim of the Russian land, native of the Chernihiv region - hegumen Daniel, who left a lampad at the Holy Sepulcher. "The Orthodox Ukraine," said hegumeness Seraphima, "is firm in faith, and its was witnessed to the whole world during the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church possesses inestimable spiritual wealth. One of the manifestations of the spiritual heritage is the Peresopnytsia Gospel."
In conclusion of the event those present watched the presentation film "Peresopnytsia Gospels".
