Presentation of Peresopnytsia Gospels Held at Jerusalem Patriarchate











On September 26, as part of the Holy Land pilgrimage dedicated to the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr presented a copy of the Peresopnytsia Gospels to His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem. A large group of pilgrims of more than 800 persons, including the hierarchs and priests from various dioceses of the UOC from all over Ukraine is taking part in the pilgrimage. It is headed by His Beatitude in his own person. Numerous Ukrainian pilgrims gathered at the Grand Hall of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem to participate in the presentation. A large group of pilgrims from Moldova with Metropolitan Vladimir of Chisinau and all Moldova at the head joined the Ukrainian group.

Addressing His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos with a word of greeting, His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr told a story of creation of the Peresopnytsia Gospels and of the initiative of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to make a facsimile reprint of this record of the Ukrainian nation. He mentioned the close connections between the Orthodox Church in UkraineUkraine in 1620. The Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church expressed gratitude to the Patriarch of Jerusalem for the support his Church lends to the canonical Orthodoxy in Ukraine.

After the speech of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr the floor was taken by Mother Superior of the St. Michael Monastery of Odesa Hegumeness Seraphima (Shevchyk), chairwoman of the Synodal Department "Church and Culture", who revealed the spiritual, historical and cultural meaning of the Peresopnytsia Gospels. Thereafter His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr presented His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos with a copy of the Peresopnytsia Gospels.

Having expressed gratitude for the valuable gift, the Primate of the Church of JerusalemJerusalem and Ukraine had always been multifaceted. On the one hand, indeed, the Church of Jerusalem helped the Orthodox Ukrainians in difficult times, and on the other hand, His Beatitude Theophilos stressed the role of the pilgrims from Ukraine in preservation of the Orthodox shrines of the Holy Land. As His Beatitude Theophilos believes, the pilgrimage to the Holy Lands is a sign of unity of the Church and all her members in Christ.

Metropolitan Vladimir of Chisinau and all Moldova also addressed his greetings to the Primates of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and Jerusalem. In conclusion of the meeting the Patriarch of Jerusalem handed gifts to his guests and invoked the God's blessing unto the pilgrims.
