To the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church
With profound Christian sorrow, we have received the news of the passing away into eternity of our most loved brother into Christ, the worthy Alexius II, Patriarch of Moscow and of All-Russia, a prominent personality of the contemporary Christian world.
Patriarch Alexius II remains in our memory as a witness to Christian faith in the difficult times of Communism and as an unwavering promoter of dialog and inter-Christian and inter-faith cooperation. At the same time, the wise Patriarch Alexius II reorganized the Russian Orthodox Church in a time of rapid political and social changes in the Eastern Europe, his name being forever tied to the rebuilding of the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow, to which he gave its former glory.
At this moment of great loss not only for the Russian Orthodox Church but for the entire Orthodoxy, in the name of the hierarchs, priests and faithful of the Romanian Orthodox Church, we are expressing to the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church brotherly condolences, praying to Christ our Lord, the Eternal High Priest, to set his soul with the righteous and grant comforting and strength of faith to the entire Orthodox people within the Moscow Patriarchate.
His eternal commemoration!
† Daniel,
Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church
