Belarusian Orthodox Church mourns Patriarch Alexy II’s demise

The Belarusian Orthodox Church mourns the demise of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II, a statement released by the press service of the Belarusian exarchate reads.

79-year-old Alexy II died in his residence in Peredelkino outside Moscow. The day before during the celebration of the Candlemas Day the Patriarch performed a Divine Liturgy in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. The same day Alexy II performed a prayer service at the phylactery with hallows of Sanctifier Tikhon, Patriarch of all Russia, in the Grand Cathedral of the Don Monastery.

On December 6 an extraordinary session of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church will take place to elect a locum tenens for the patriarchal see out of permanent members of the Synod. The person will guide the church till a new patriarch is elected. The Synod is also supposed to choose the time and place for Alexy II’s burial service. The next Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia is supposed to be elected by the church council within half a year after the predecessor’s demise.

Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch for All Belarus Filaret will participate in the session of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church and the mourning procedures.
