An extract from the Gospel telling how Jesus Christ washed feet of the twelve apostles at the Last Supper was read during the rite held at Epiphany Cathedral in Moscow.
Patriarch Kirill performed actions described in the Holy Scripture. He took off his mantle, girded a special long towel around his waist, poured water from the jar into the basin, washed and dried feet of twelve priests.
Archpriest Vladimir Divakov, the Patriarch’s Secretary for Moscow city, as the senior-ranking clergyman among those whose feet were being washed, spoke the words of Apostle Peter at the Last Supper.
“It is a visual act, here a ritual action helps us understand the depth of Divine humility and condescension,” Patriarch Kirill said in his sermon.
The Primate of the Russian Church reminded that for our salvation the Lord Jesus Christ “being all-mighty, became a poor, ordinary man,” and “did things that slaves usually did to show that every personality is valuable before God.”
