Moscow, December 8, Interfax - Head of the Council of Muftis of Russia Ravil Gainutdin has recognized the contribution of the late head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexy II, to the dialogue between religions and the protection of Muslims in the days of the so-called cartoon scandal.
"At times when campaigns slandering Islam, religious scandals were launched in this country and especially in the West Patriarch Alexy II came to the defense of truth and called for making a difference between religion and extremism, terrorism and crime," Ravil Gainutdin said in his Monday sermon in the Moscow cathedral mosque on the occasion of the feast of Eid Al-Adha.
He called the Patriarch a peace keeper, a person of open spirit, an advocate of strengthening religious peace, promoting a dialogue and cooperation between the traditional regions of Russia.
"Not just the head of the Church but a statesman and public figure has died," the mufti said. On behalf of the Council of Muftis he expressed deep and sincere condolences to the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church and all compatriots on the death of the Patriarch.
