The meeting of the Primates of Orthodox Churches was held within the framework of the Holy Apostle Paul's year and focused upon discussion of the internal problems of the Orthodox Church as well as the problems of the modern world. The main subject of the meeting was the issue of unity of the Orthodox Church. His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew I focused on the problem at the Primate's assembly.
The culmination point of the meeting and the testimony of unity of the Orthodox world became the common Liturgy celebrated on October 12, at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Georges in the Phanar. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over this Liturgy. Concelebrating to His All-Holiness were the Primates of the Orthodox Churches, heads of the Churches' delegations, and the Primate of the UOC His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr. The Message of the Primates of the Local Orthodox Churches was an outcome of the brotherly theological and liturgical communion.

The Message of the Primates of the Orthodox Churches to Orthodox people and all humanity

The heads of the Orthodox Churches of the world specified the problems and challenges confronting today the humanity and the Orthodox Church, among them are:
- internal contradictions of the Orthodox Church on ideological and ethnophyletic grounds;
- problems of estrangement, splits and conflicts between people and nations;
- ecological problems;
- secularisation problem;

- family and youth problems.
Having outlined the main problems of the church and social life, the Primates reaffirmed "from the See of the First-Throne among the Churches":
а) their obligation to safeguard the unity of the Orthodox Church;
б) their desire for the swift healing of every canonical anomaly;
в) our desire to continue the theological dialogues with other Christians, as well as the interreligious dialogue;
г) their support for the initiatives for the protection of the natural environment;
д) their decision to proceed with the necessary actions, in order to form an Inter-Orthodox Committee to study issues of bioethics.
The Primates of the Orthodox Churches also welcomed the proposition of the Ecumenical Church to convene Panorthodox Consultations in 2009 on the subject of the Orthodox diasporas and for the continuation of preparations for the Holy and Great Council.
