Moscow, January 12, Interfax – Patriarchal Locum Tenens Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad believes future patriarch will have to make changes in quality of church mission.

“Today we have to revive churchism in the broad sense of the word – through theological education, missionary work, catechism, social work, church and public activity,” Metropolitan Kirill told Interfax-Religion when asked about the tasks of future Russian Church primate.
According to him, “great work” is in store for the Church, as “the time gives rise to new problems which require much hard work.” Metropolitan Kirill pointed out that increased number of Russian church parishes “cannot but impress,” though he further reminded that Alexy II “spoke of the necessity to change the quality of church life.”

“There will be a task for everyone. God grant, there will be no “lukewarm” people among our pastors and parishioners, who are indifferent to Church mission, to its ministry,” the Patriarchal Locum Tenens said.

He also believes that “national trust” of our society to Orthodoxy “is the achievement of His Holiness” Patriarch Alexy II, as many people “loved and respected him.”
“A new primate will face a very difficult task, which is to be a worthy successor of the late primate,” Metropolitan Kirill believes.
Besides, transfiguration of the Church for the recent years, restoration and building of numerous churches, rise of Orthodox thought, book publishing, mass media, tuning the dialogue with the state – all these “good changes were carried out under omophorium of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy,” Metropolitan Kirill stressed.

“I am sure that the Local Council, representing the whole Russian Church, will thank you to its late primate,” he said.
