Bulgarian Orthodox Church Established

Hamburg has a new Christian Orthodox Church. The Bulgarian community celebrated the opening of the Bugenhagen Church in Hamburg-Barmbek on Sunday June 1st. A ceremonial church service marked the establishment of this church of The Holy Cyrill and the Holy Methodus.

It was celebrated by the Metropolitan Simeon from the Holy Synod in Sophia, who invested Priest Otez Antonij Naydenov. The service was attended by the who-is-who of the Bulgarian community in this city: Dr. Tinka Troeva, counsellor at the Bulgarian embassy to Berlin, honorary citizens of Hamburg Prof. Dr. Helmut and Prof. h.c. Hannelore Greve, Prof. Dr. Gerd-Winand Imeyer, honorary consul general of Bulgaria, Dr. Boris Galunsky, chairman of the parish council, and a lot of Bulgarian people living in Hamburg and its suroundings.

The ambassadors of the religious groups in Hamburg, Bishop Dr. Hans-Jochen Jaschke (Archbishopric Hamburg), Provost Kirsten Fehrs (Protestant-Lutherian Church Nordelbien) and Fatih Yildiz (Islamic Community Hamburg) are all looking forward to integrating the Bulgarian-Orthodox Church into the interreligious dialogue.
